Benje Williams Takes Sixth At National Greco Roman Meet

Cabrillo senior and 1973 CIF champion Benje Williams finished sixth in the Greco Roman rounds at the National Wrestling Federation Tournament in Iowa City. The 115 pounder went 2-2 against top U S competitors under 20, losing to last year and this year’s champion. He advances to the freestyle portion of the national event today and tomorrow.

Lompoc Hosts Yearlings Round in Inviting Softball Tourney

The Lompoc Rec Department hosts an eight-team double elimination Yearling softball tournament with teams from Ventura Northridge Tarzana Panorama City and Mission Hills. Local squads Lompoc I and II clash with visitors to earn a SMAF finals bid in Los Angeles. Lompoc Colts last year claimed the SMAF title in their bracket. The finals are Sunday at Thompson Park noon.

Parker enters grid Hall of Fame as first pure lineman

Parker, an eight time all pro with the Baltimore Colts, becomes the first pure offensive lineman elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The 1957 No 1 pick from Ohio State spent eight seasons with Cleveland then joined Baltimore and retired in 1967. Woody Hayes will present Parker at induction as Joe Schmidt and Raymond Berry are also honored.

Bobby Bonds homers twice and drives in five as the San Francisco Giants crush the Padres 10-2 and 6-5 in a doubleheader. He also dazzled with a defensive gem in a tense 10-inning win.
