Nervous hijacker shoots stewardess and passenger

A National Airlines DC8 bound Miami to Houston was hijacked to Cuba by a nervous man identified as S Guerra. He fired twice, injuring stewardess Sue Bond and passenger Larry Evans before the plane landed in Havana. Cuban authorities detained him and confiscated his weapons. Both victims were treated and released in Miami.

City budget outlines year end salary increases across departments

Hancock College to Offer School Bus Driver Training

Allan Hancock College evening division launches a free course to train future and current school bus drivers starting Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Room SC 301. Lompoc Hosts AA Convention Draws 500 Attendees

About 500 Alcoholics Anonymous members wrapped a two day regional convention in Lompoc, with out of town guests from San Diego to San Francisco. The event featured speakers, a barbecue, and a Sunday morning spiritual program for Region 22 covering northern Santa Barbara and part of San Luis Obispo counties.

Miss Universe 1971 Georgina Rizk Crowned in Miami

Georgina Rizk of Lebanon, 18, 5 ft 7 in, 121 pounds with measurements 35-24-35, won the Miss Universe title at the 20th pageant in Miami Beach. Runners-up were Toni Raynard, Pirro Attila, Beba Franco, Eliane Parreira Guimaraes. Rizk phoned Beirut after her victory.

Back yard ag preserve proposal heads to Santa Barbara Board

Santa Barbara attorney James R. Christiansen asks the Board of Supervisors to study creating mini agricultural preserves in residential yards saying he could qualify by growing plants and vegetables at his 205 Ravenscroft Dr Goleta home. He cites rising taxes as motivation while county projections show tax rates increasing from 3.01 to 3.75 or more this year. Assets of Lompoc Savings and Loan exceed 15 million dollars, the lender formed July 3 1963 with 500000 capitalization.

Spirited bidding at Santa Maria 4 H and FFA Junior Auction

Adults backed the 4 H clubs and FFA as bidders topped the old sheep record at $7 a pound for Randy Ford's 106 pound grand champion. Other top buys included Melinda Scott's 115 pound sheep at $5 per pound and Deborah Weber's 202 pound FFA steer at $3 per pound.
