Bathtub race winner claims world record in Vancouver

Bill Rathlef of Nanimo British Columbia won the Order of the Golden Plug in the 32 mile bathtub race from Nanimo to Kitsilano Beach crossing the Straight of Georgia in two hours six minutes. The Loyal Nanimo Bathtub Society sponsored the event attracting tubs from as far as Australia and Puerto Rico.

Quake rocks Pacific islands with 8.3 magnitude damage

The 8.3 quake struck New Britain and New Ireland in the southwest Pacific, floods hit Rabaul downtown, heavy building damage reported. Rabaul and surrounding towns faced tidal waves and two feet of water as the tremor marked the region's worst in 65 years.

Man survives 70-foot fall then dies at Yosemite

Vaccination drive expands to six states to curb sleeping sickness

The Agriculture Department extended its emergency vaccination program to California, Arizona, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida after an emergency meeting. The effort, already under way in Texas and eight other states, aims to immunize horses against Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis, creating a barrier from California to Florida while a ban on interstate horse shipments remains in place.
