Lompoc Lacrosse? Wait, baseball no-hitter ends in loss

Lompoc pitcher Ted Grafton carried a no hitter into the seventh, but the Lancers lost 4-2 to Mountain View. Grafton settled for a one-hitter as Lompoc outhit Mountain View 5-1 but stranded six runners. A fifth inning run came on a Hubbard single after Fridrich’s error, and a sixth inning rally fell short with two quick outs and a blown squeeze bunt.

Triple fells 13s Berry, veteran of the Village Hills little league, pitched the distance in 80 degree heat, allowed two walks, and added a base hit. Green to Butterfield to Schultz started a key seventh inning double play to end Hollister threats. Greg Wilson drove in Art Beltran for the lone run. Schultz added the team’s fourth hit.

Re-gripping Errors in Golf Swing Highlighted by Boros

Golf tips explain re-gripping as the costliest swing error caused by the left hand slipping near the top. Julius Boros advises slowing the tempo at the apex to keep a firm grip and allow a freer turn, preventing early wrist uncock and loss of clubhead speed. Also notes Steelers acquire Tom Keating from the Raiders for an undisclosed 1974 draft pick. Keating is a 30 year old Michigan alumnus who played eight seasons with Oakland and appeared in AFL All-Star games and the 1968 Super Bowl.

Longtin and Griffith lead Marlins to tri county swim victory

Lompoe swimmers led by Jill Longtin and Todd Griffith win multiple events at the Tri County Swim Meet in Santa Ynez. Longtin tallies five firsts in the girls 8 and under division while Griffith claims five in the boys 9-10 class. The Marlins total 350 points, ahead of San Luis and Santa Maria, with about 40 Marlins earning 51 medals and four relay firsts as meet heads to San Luis Obispo on August 4.
