Sen Robert J Lagomarsino leads floor debate for the package while Sen George Moscone vows possible amendments. At least three GOP senators oppose the plan as it shifts 1 billion in local property taxes to state levies and aims to cut property taxes 20 to 40 percent, needing 21 votes.

Property tax relief proposal expands homeowners exemption

The measure would raise the homeowners exemption from 750 to 1000 and add 20 percent of the remaining assessed valuation. It would extend the exemption to cooperative and condominium owners who currently lack it. Passage requires 27 votes due to the financing appropriation.

Heavy rains strike Southeast as Becky spawns tornadoes

United Press International reports Becky wet the Southeast with two to six inches of rain. Tornadoes touched down in Swainsboro Georgia, destroying two homes and injuring two people, and in Panacea Florida, killing no one. The city planning a concession stand in Ryan Park to be built and operated jointly by Little League and Youth Football League with shared costs under city agreement. A six man committee led by Councilman Stevens will study highway beautification from downtown Lompoc to Vandenberg AFB. City parks attendance runs near double last summer as plans advance for Cebada Canyon county park overnight parking supervised by the city. Feasibility of city school district lighting at Lompoc High baseball field postponed.
