Apollo 15 aims to trace lunar crust at Apennine landing site
Apollo 15 astronauts David Scott James Irwin and Alfred Worden plan to land near the Apennine front at the 12 000 foot high Apennines to collect rock samples from crustal material and rocks excavated deep beneath the surface seeking clues to the moon s primitive crust and early history. The mission aims to sample the oldest lunar terrain before Apollo 16 and 17 close the program.
