Nationwide drought drives multistate crop losses in 1977 heat
The drought battered farmers from Dawson Georgia to California with thousands of acres of corn and other crops burned by heat. States including North Carolina Alabama and Virginia declared disaster areas while California faced a 1.5 billion dollar hit to the economy as irrigation and well drilling surged and bankers tightened credit. Experts warned rain remained unlikely through 1978 and cities feared water shortages without rain.

Prime Minister Ian Smith announced parliament will be dissolved today and general elections set for August 31.
