West signals retirement after 1974-75 season

Los Angeles Lakers star Jerry West told a Manila television audience he will retire after the 1974-75 season. West, in Manila as one of 10 Miss Universe judges, said 15 years of basketball is a long time. The famed guard plans to retire following the upcoming season.

Swann acquitted in police assault case

Lynn Swann former USC star and first round Steelers pick and three relatives were found innocent in a San Francisco Municipal Court trial on assault and battery charges related to an Feb 1 police altercation. The defendants had faced civil suits seeking 2 million dollars for alleged police brutality.

Rams veterans decide not to picket rookie camp opening

Los Angeles Rams veterans voted to observe the NFL Players Association strike by staying away from the rookie and free agent camp opening in Fullerton. Player representative Tom Mack said no picket lines would form unless veterans cross the strike boundary before it's settled.

Racing driver Kurosawa indicted in Fuji Speedway crash

Motoharu Kurosawa, 34, was indicted for involuntary manslaughter after a June 5 Fuji Grand Championship crash at Fuji Speedway that killed two drivers and injured five spectators. Police said spectator footage suggested he rammed Motoo Kitano to gain position.

Local pro duo share first round lead in So Cal PGA

Jerry Preuss of Alisal and Sam Rudolph of Santa Barbara fired three under par 69s to share the first round lead at Mission Viejo Country Club. Only five of 82 starters broke par as Bill Blanton Eddie Merrins and Rick Divel tied for second at 71. John Ruedi Pinky Stevenson and Ron O Connor were even par at 72.

NFL Players Association chief Bill Curry urged a three stage plan and round the clock bargaining starting Friday to end the 18 day walkout.
