Bell System workers vote to authorize strike amid AT&T talks

The Communications Workers of America authorized a strike vote for about 500 000 Bell System workers after rejecting AT T's contract offer. CWA president Glenn E Watts announced the move shortly after more than 100 contracts expired at midnight as 230 000 other strikers returned to work. In Charleston West Virginia about 1300 CWA Local 2001 members held an unauthorized overnight picket. Negotiations continued between AT T and two major AFL CIO unions and independents representing Bell System employees.
