Fusion power forecast by 2001 creepy? Nuclear dream or plan?
UPI reports Dr. Robert L. Hirsch of the Atomic Energy Commission told the Radiation Research conference that the United States could have a fusion test reactor by 1980 a demonstration reactor by 1997 and fusion power plants generating electricity by 2001. He said fusion offers safety and cost advantages though the time scale remains debated. The fusion program is compared to the moon landing in pace.
