County budget hearings leave tax rate uncertain
The 1969-70 county property tax rate remains unclear as public hearings end. Administrative Officer Ray mond D Johnson says the rate could land around 2.37 per 100 assessed value but may rise or fall after revenue reports from Auditor A T Eaves Jr. The board postponed budget adoption to next Monday with total expenditures up to 47.2 million and hopes for cash carryover to lower the rate toward the current 2.32.

Woman injured in single-vehicle crash near Drum Canyon
Gwendoline Kate McConnell, 36, of 218 N. B Street, suffered abrasions to arm and leg when her foreign-made bus overturned on Highway 246 near Drum Canyon. She was treated at Vandenberg AFB Hospital after being ejected as the vehicle skidded and rolled. CHP attributed loss of control to unfamiliarity with the vehicle.
