Israelis raid Nablus search for guerrillas in Jordan

Israeli Army troops and police surrounded the occupied city of Nablus in the West Bank and conducted a predawn raid with arrests reported. Witnesses said homes were blown up in Hebron and arms smuggling suspected. In Tel Aviv area 29 Arabs were arrested after a Tantura beach bombing. An Israeli soldier was wounded near El Kantara on the Suez Canal amid cross border fire. Iraq marks Feisal assassination anniversary and July 1968 revolution with Baathist regime in power.

Nixon adds Britain to the agenda

Brothers reunited after 28 years in Turin car clash

Two men who collided and argued at a Turin intersection turned to embrace after bystanders urged them to exchange insurance. The brothers, separated during World War II, had not seen each other for 28 years.

Lompoc Grass Fire Contained. Suspected Children Seen Fleeing

Firefighters contained a 1,500 square foot grass blaze in the 400 block of North R Street Saturday. Officials blamed two children seen fleeing before arrival at 1 p.m. There was no damage. A second small fire at 528 Lupine Avenue caused about $10 in damage to a rear fence. Kenneth Bettendorf lives nearby.

Chilean lawyer claims ownership of the moon

Jenaro Gajardo Vera, a 49 year old Chilean title attorney, says he owns the moon by a 1956 Talca court deed and asks President Nixon for permission to visit the United States to share the title with the Apollo 11 astronauts upon their return.

Massachusetts Guard Faces Bug Heavy Bivouac

Camp Drum New York saw Massachusetts National Guard soldiers endure a summer bivouac hindered by unusually large bugs. A sergeant said the insects are as big as bullets this year and noted the government bans DDT for control.

Census survey to sample area residents this July

A nationwide employment survey by the U S Department of Commerce Bureau of the Census will sample area residents the week of July 14. The monthly effort measures employment, unemployment and job seekers data for national economic health, with strict confidentiality of individuals. Interviewers Mrs Jane H Grant and Mrs Helen F Vishanoff will visit households in Santa Maria and Santa Barbara.

Salvadoran blackout ordered amid border clash threat

The Salvadorean government ordered a nationwide blackout for one minute and traffic lights out tonight after a two hour battle with mortars and machine guns across the Honduras border. Honduran officials said Salvadorean fire wounded several civilians with no troop casualties reported. The clash follows a series of escalating confrontations tied to a recent soccer match.

Irish prime minister seeks end to Northern Ireland violence

Prime Minister James Chichester Clark cut short a Britain vacation and returned to Belfast to curb Northern Ireland's worst violence of the summer. Over 40 injured and 40 arrested as daylight in Londonderry and Dungiven brought relative calm, though armed police remained at tight control. In Londonderry, 21 policemen and 18 civilians were injured during clashes as looting and street battles continued.

Two CAP members die in Sierra search for missing plane

Civil Air Patrol pilots James R. Patterson and C. E. Behymer perished when their four seat Mooney crashed on a mountain ridge west of Big Pine during a weekend search for the missing Gamblers Special DC3. The wreck was found after the large operation ended with the DC3 unaccounted for.

Russian fleet anchors near Cuba

A Soviet task force of eight ships is anchored inside the Gulf of Mexico about 75 miles west of Key West, the first recorded Soviet naval presence in the gulf. The group includes a guided missile cruiser and two guided missile destroyers, plus submarines and oilers. They plan a July 20 visit to Havana, but the rationale remains unclear.

Nixon hears prayers at White House service for Apollo mission

President and guests attended the eighth executive mansion prayer service of the year led by Rev. Paul Noren. Attendees included Nixon and family, Cabinet members, and aides as prayers focused on Apollo 11 success and Nixon’s July world tour. FBI Director Hoover praised the sermon’s concise focus.
