Irene Dunne backs Allan Hancock King and I cast

Irene Dunne praised the Allan Hancock College summer stock production of The King and I at the Performing Arts Center. She called Leanna Nelson and Kirk Mee excellent and urged broader state touring for the company. The show, featuring ballet scenes and Eliza, runs through August 24 along with The Miser and other plays.

Pruning of school aid bill planned in California

UPI reports Senate author Sen. Stephen Teale plans to trim the $211 million school aid bill to the $120 million Reagan would approve. Democrats and 17 rebel Republicans backed a $372 million package despite Reagan’s veto threat, forcing last minute coalition actions and possible shelving of the larger measure.

Elizabeth Taylor weighs retirement from screen life

London reports 37 year old actress Elizabeth Taylor says she is seriously considering quitting the screen and living a life of leisure with husband Richard Burton and four children. She spoke on a BBC radio program saying she may never work again unless something absolutely captivating comes along.

North Vietnam pledges prisoner releases despite U.S. raids

North Vietnam stated the release of three American prisoners will proceed despite U.S. bombing raids on villages July 7-8, calling the acts inhumane but maintaining humanitarian policy. Xuan Thuy, Hanoi chief negotiator, said the plan remains on track as talks continue in Paris. A Hanoi Radio broadcast alleged the raids and chemical drops in the DMZ with injuries reported but no fatalities. David Dellinger, head of the National Mobilization Committee, said he met twice with North Vietnamese officials on the release.
