No takers for Cachuma water surplus this year

South Coast districts face 9000 acre feet of surplus Cachuma water with limited orders. Goleta Montecito and Carpinteria moratoriums and good rains reduce urgency as districts hold full entitlements of 18800 acre feet while some may let surplus go begging. Santa Barbara Summerland and Santa Ynez districts previously did not order surplus.

Fires ignite acres near Orcutt gut laundry dryer

A fire near Orcutt destroyed a laundry dryer's unit and clothes worth 2100 dollars at Alamo Cleaners in Lompoc. Winds spread flames to 25 acres of grass and scrub, with 14 units and multiple agencies fighting it. No injuries or threatened structures reported. Authorities also study recovering suppression costs from parents in juvenile fires.

Planners Agree to Act on Lot Split East of City

Lompoc Planning Commission with three absentees voted 3 to 1 to back the original 40 AL zoning for land west of Highway 246 and southwest of La Purisima Mission. Robert Kranig dissented while William Fick joined Copeland and Peto. The split would create two parcels 12.3 and 67.5 acres for a Lilley family proposal.

County expands automatic crossing gates to main SP line

County Transportation Director Leland R. Steward announced all main Southern Pacific line crossings in the county now have automatic gate arms and flashing lights. Two signals were approved for the Lompoc area. Floradale Ave. crossing installation cost is estimated at 21,400 dollars with the county paying half and half recoverable from the Public Utilities Commission after work completion.
