Two local deaths raise U.S. highway toll to 545
The July 4 weekend fatality count on U S highways reached 545 with two local motorcycle deaths in the Lompoc area. Noleta Mason of Los Angeles, 21, died and her husband James Mason, 21, was seriously injured after losing control on San Marcos Pass Road. A second crash on the same route killed 22 year old Alexander Falcon of Santa Barbara, passenger on a bike driven by 20 year old Jay Hillie, also of Santa Barbara, as the cycle crossed the centerline and hit two vehicles. Final NSC figures showed 813 violent deaths nationwide for the holiday period with drownings, plane crashes, and other accidents also contributing.
