Green card harvesters toil in Lompoc fields for Del Mar Packing

Sixty four Mexican and Mexican American workers harvest lettuce cabbage and cucumber for Del Mar Packing Co in the Lompoc Valley. The crews are paid by piece work earning about 43 cents per lettuce box and 42 cents per cabbage box, with some weeks reaching over 450 dollars for the week. Two local deaths raise U.S. highway toll to 545

The July 4 weekend fatality count on U S highways reached 545 with two local motorcycle deaths in the Lompoc area. Noleta Mason of Los Angeles, 21, died and her husband James Mason, 21, was seriously injured after losing control on San Marcos Pass Road. A second crash on the same route killed 22 year old Alexander Falcon of Santa Barbara, passenger on a bike driven by 20 year old Jay Hillie, also of Santa Barbara, as the cycle crossed the centerline and hit two vehicles. Final NSC figures showed 813 violent deaths nationwide for the holiday period with drownings, plane crashes, and other accidents also contributing.

Customs court rules Nixon exceeded bounds on 1971 surcharge

The U S Customs Court ruled President Nixon lacked authority to impose a 10 percent import surcharge on Aug 15 1971 and ordered restitution of all funds collected during the four month period. The decision faces possible appeal to the Court of Customs and Patents Appeals.

Cosmonauts Frolic as Soviets Seek Space Record

Moscow reports Col Pavel Popovich and Lt Col Yuri Artyukhin, two cosmonauts aboard a space laboratory launched July 3, are in good spirits despite minor clashes with ground controllers.
