Probe planned on violations of youth job program

The California State Board of Equalization will investigate alleged violations of the Summer Jobs for Youth Program including hiring five ineligible persons. The board vowed to fire any youth worker who does not qualify as a disadvantaged student. The Sacramento Union noted that children of board supervisory employees reportedly received summer jobs under the program. Backgrounds of the five employees will be checked.

Four Manson family children reunited with mother in California

Four children aged 3 to 10 linked to the Manson family were found living in a hole under a chicken coop on a northern Los Angeles area ranch. They were returned to their mother, Mrs. Sarah Rice, 29, now in Healdsburg, with decisions on keeping them pending Sonoma County child welfare review. An infant girl, Shemyiah Nyomi Sipes, 10 months, remains in juvenile custody.

Nationwide warm July with sporadic storms and a Texas rainmaker

Warm July weather dominated the nation with occasional showers and thunderstorms. In Texas drought, rainmaker Francis Neal Bosco charges 10 cents per acre inch and says he has earned 800 dollars since arriving June 10. Banks raise rates as Bank of America boosts savings to 4.5 percent, prime to six percent, and home mortgages 0.25 to 0.5 percent.

Las Vegas explosions kill man near shopping center

A series of three blasts rocked a Las Vegas shopping center, killing a man whose body was found in a donut shop. Eight shops were destroyed and 100 nearby apartments evacuated as fire crews fought the blaze and investigators examined possible causes.

Chavez Leads Sacramento March Against Bill

Cesar Chavez led about 2,000 United Farm Workers in Sacramento to protest a Democratic sponsored bill creating a state agriculture labor relations board. The rally followed a shelved measure and urged Democrats to discipline ally lawmakers or risk losing farm worker support. Delores Huerta was assaulted during testimony at the Capitol.

Tippler's tax defeated by Senate panel

The Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee voted to keep drink prices unchanged as it rejected a measure to allow a 5 percent tippler's tax on all alcoholic drinks sold. Mayor Yorty urged approval saying municipalities would gain funds, while former Mayor Shelley backed the plan noting city coffers could grow. Pierson argued the tax, if statewide, could generate about 35 million annually.

Mansfield calls for bipartisanship to fix economy

Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield urged a one time bipartisan meeting of Capitol Hill and Nixon administration leaders to defuse the economic morass with a six month freeze on wages prices and profits.
