County budget hearings open with slight increases despite aims

The Board of Supervisors began public hearings on the 1971 72 county budget set at 68.2 million dollars as increases emerged for Superior Court and District Attorney budgets and other departments. Officials expect hearings to run through July 16 with the possibility to cut budgets later but not add to appropriations. Public sentiment from taxpayers groups urged no pay raises and tighter controls to fund salary reviews and contingency goals.

Reagan Says Blame Democrats For Tax Increase

California Governor Ronald Reagan warns a $430 million shortfall in the $6.78 billion austerity budget may force a tax increase. He says balance requires income tax withholding welfare and Medi Cal reform, or he will sign a tax hike. Democrats challenge the move and welfare reform remains stalled. SALT talks open crucial new phase in ABM limits

Viet troops raid big Communist supply dump near Laotian border

Elite South Vietnamese Black Panther shock troops, with 30 U S helicopters, seized a large supply dump near the Laotian border 24 miles south of the DMZ. They found 38 bodies from air strikes, plus 12 tons of anti aircraft shells, 10 tons of rice, three Soviet trucks and other matériel before blowing the site.
