Attorney Kazan files claim action against Johns Manville plant
Oakland attorney Steven Kazan filed 28 Workmen's Compensation claims at the Santa Barbara office alleging 12 deaths and multiple injuries from asbestos and dust exposure at Johns Manville's Lompoc plant. He predicts million dollar lawsuits this fall representing former workers and survivors. Other JM plants nationwide face similar suits as Kazan criticizes the compensation system as unrealistically limiting recoveries.

Council debates public hearing on illegal lot line change
The Lompoc City Council, in a lengthy session led by mayor pro tem Elinor Lefkowitz, tentatively set August 3 for a public hearing on an ordinance to permit creating a substandard lot to adjust a property line. The Balaam family home sits eight feet over the line, and the plan would shift the line 11 feet, yielding a 6,042 square foot lot below the 7,000 minimum. The measure would only affect this case, with the council weighing planning commission denial against input from all sides.
