Holiday traffic toll comes in under forecast

United Press International reports the Bicentennial Fourth of July weekend yielded 523 traffic deaths and 682 total fatalities across all causes from Friday 6 p.m. to Monday midnight. Largest single workmen compensation filing against J M in Santa Barbara

Stanford attorney Steven Kazan planned to file 30 claims on behalf of former Johns Manville workers and survivors at the Workmen's Compensation Appeals Board in Santa Barbara. Nogle stabbed in family row in Santa Barbara area

Archie Nogle 40 of Lompoc was listed in satisfactory condition at Cottage Hospital Santa Barbara after knife wounds from his brother in law Ronald Lucas 36 of Buellton during a family altercation. Barbara Nogle 44 received minor wounds and was hospitalized. Lucas booked in Santa Barbara County jail for investigation.

Administration sources say President Ford plans to veto a 3.95 billion public works bill that sponsors say would create or preserve 350000 jobs. Libyan hijacker surrenders on Spanish island

A 20 year old Libyan man hijacked a Libyan Airlines Boeing 727 shortly after takeoff. He surrendered to Spanish authorities in Palma de Mallorca with 86 aboard unharmed. The plane reportedly diverted after a brief stakeout by Tunisian and Algerian authorities. The motive remained unclear and authorities labeled the hijacker potentially mentally ill. The aircraft later returned to Libya about four hours after landing.
