FBI cuts 75 agents on Hearst kidnapping case

FBI has pulled 75 agents off the Patricia Hearst case since the May 17 gunbattle that left six SLA members dead. Charles Bates said 150 agents had worked on the case since Hearst was kidnapped in February. Hearst, 20, joined the SLA and denounced her family in tape messages. she is wanted on federal and state charges for a Southern California holdup.

Holiday fire risk forecast across California for July 4 weekend

State and federal forestry spokesmen warn fire danger will be critical in California as warm spring rains leave tall grass in many areas. William Harrington cites higher fuel in the Division of Forestry and James Ruppelt notes danger ranges from high to very high across California's 18 national forests. A single range and brush fire west of Red Bluff charred 6,500 acres before containment.

California crime victim aid program expanded to 23000 limit

Attorney General Evelle J. Younger announced a new state law increasing crime victim compensation to up to 23000 for lost wages and medical bills. Judge rules Farr immune from grand jury probe

Los Angeles Times reporter William Farr gained immunity under California shield law in a grand jury dispute. Superior Court Judge William Choate vacated contempt and freed Farr but he must appear again July 29 to address potential jail for the original contempt citation.

Nixon associate C Arnholt Smith indicted in bank funds case

C Arnholt Smith former US National Bank executive and Westgate founder faced 25 felony counts including conspiring to take 27.5 million from his bank. Co-defendant Philip Taft also charged, as the bank collapsed in October amid the largest U.S. bank failure. Both released on bonds and to return July 31.
