Local theft targets equipment near Lompoc Airport

Sheriff's officials investigate the theft of more than 1000 dollars worth of items from two operators near Lompoc Airport. Missing are 17 new and 22 old radiators and about 800 feet of welding lead wire. DuFrene Crane Co. reported the wire missing and Kenneth Hampton the radiators.

Board keeps backyard burning ban despite other county relaxations

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors approved changes to air pollution rules allowing pesticide container burning in fields but did not act on resuming backyard burning in north county residential areas. A public hearing was moved to March 5 for further testimony as the rules committee meets Feb. 21 to study amendments.

Goleta district wins one year water loan approval

The Goleta County Water District won county agency approval to borrow 3500 acre feet of its Lake Cachuma entitlement with a one year repayment plan. The vote followed a gap between the district and the consultant over repayment terms and came as officials warned of a possible water shortage this year.

Diaz withdraws from Lompoc school board race

Edward J. Diaz withdrew from the Lompoc Unified School District Board of Trustees race citing a possible conflict of interest due to his wife being a teacher in the district. His name will not appear on the April 17 ballot. Diaz plans to seek other elective office and noted a future run for the 1974 Lompoc City Council race. He was among seven who took out nominating papers. six others had not filed.

Armenian land developer linked to killings urged war in letter

An elderly Armenian American land developer Geurgen M. Yanikian, charged with killing Turkish Consul General Mehmet Baydar and Vice Consul General Bahadir Demir in Santa Barbara, allegedly wrote a letter urging violent action against Turkish representatives. The letter, received by the California Courier editor George Mason, urged “war” and claimed violence as the only path to results. A similar letter arrived at a Santa Barbara newspaper. authorities planned arraignment today. Aram Saroyan assisted translating a lengthy letter to the Santa Barbara News Press.

Beautification spending revealed by Lompoc commission

The Lompoc Beautification Commission reports $2,019.13 spent from the voluntary fund on city projects including $1,467.05 for tree planting at the Wye and $552.08 for eucalyptus around City Hall. Net proceeds from Premiere '72 and monthly utility payments totaled $4,110.16, leaving the fund at $2,091.03.

Fighting eases as Vietnam ceasefire holds promise

Reports from Saigon indicate fighting tapers on the second ceasefire day with four of five highways reopened. Attacks numbered 311 in the last 24 hours, down from 426, as officials warn flare ups could recur. casualty totals reach 2,066, including 1,761 Communist soldiers and 296 Saigon troops. US helicopter crewman WO Anthony Dal Pozzo Jr. is dead, the first American casualty since the truce began.
