Lompoc, County strike racquetball site pact

City negotiates a 50 year lease of 4.5 acres between Lompoc Shopping Center and the high school for a park area with private BKB Associates to develop a $400000 racquetball facility. The agreement allows a noncancelable lease and a token $1 yearly rent while outlining funding for park development and potential county tax withholding if court action occurs. The final lease goes before the City Council after county approval set for February 14.

Freddie Prinze Dies Suspected Suicide Shot at Home

Hollywood actor Freddie Prinze 22 shot himself in the head at his Wilshire Boulevard apartment after a troubled divorce and upcoming court date. He was in critical condition at UCLA hospital as doctors weighed immediate surgery. Police said a note and a phone call to his family preceded the tragedy.

Mondale meets OECD official in Paris on economic stimulus

Vice President Mondale spoke with Emile Van Lennep secretary general of OECD about Carter administration policies. Van Lennep said the talks left him encouraged and noted potential gains for member nations including a rising gross national product. They discussed energy cooperation and international monetary issues.

Miguelito Channel Project Faces Board Review And Bids

The Board of Supervisors will discuss Miguelito Channel improvements as county engineers compare alternate plans with 10.5 million and 11.9 million price tags. The plan enlarges the debris basin at O Street and Olive Avenue and widens the channel to Santa Ynez River, with fencing along the entire length. Design starts in March and construction could begin this year or in 1978, with three phases totaling about 24 to 30 months.

Nine injured in area accidents from rain slicked highways

Over the past 24 hours nine people sustained injuries in three separate crashes. The most serious case involved Trey Kelley a 17 year old from Atascadero with a head injury after a pickup rolled over on Highway 101 near Las Cruces. James Mitchell 18 of Beverly Hills driver of the truck was treated for a back injury. Two other occupants Mark Francis 18 West Hollywood and Gary Barnes 17 Atascadero were released after treatment. A second crash on the boulevard stop at Santa Rosa Road and Highway 1 injured Jorge Monreal 19 Oxnard and passengers Martha Cordova 15 Florentino Perez 21 and Adalia Espinosa 23 all from Oxnard or Lompoc with Espinosa the most serious released today. The third crash near Gaviota Rest Stop injured Kwok Lim Stephen Lau 26 Pomona with a head cut while his car rolled over on Highway 101. He was treated and released.

Blizzard shuts down Midwest and Northeast amid severe storm

A deep Midwest to East blizzard halted travel and closed thousands of schools and highways. Wind chills reached 80 below in parts of Illinois as governors declared emergencies and National Guard units aided snow removal across Ohio Michigan Minnesota New York and surrounding areas. A Windsor Ontario woman was found frozen on the Detroit River ice.

Convalescent bed rates rise as CCC seeks funding

The Convalescent Care Center board raised intermediate care beds from 18 to 21 dollars and skilled nursing beds from 25 to 27 dollars daily starting March 1 to curb losses. They urge community letters to lawmakers for licensing 13 more intermediate beds, hoping to halve the deficit if approved.
