A Da Nang air base under attack by seven 122 mm rockets killed one American and wounded three. South Vietnamese officers say the assault is a last minute bid to seize land and population before the ceasefire at 8 a m Sunday.
A federal grand jury in Baltimore indicted 26 people including six police officers and a reputed Maryland gambling kingpin on bribery and bookmaking charges. The probe, ongoing since last May, signals more arrests and indictments as part of a wider East Coast police scandal.
Secretary of State William P. Rogers signed the Paris cease-fire agreement in two ceremonies marking the end of American involvement. U.S. officials expect prisoners of war to begin returning within two weeks with more to follow by Feb. 11. Le Duc Tho left Paris for Hanoi ahead of the signing. President Nixon plans a nationwide radio address to detail a 268.7 billion dollar budget for the next year. White House officials say the proposal will impose strict spending limits and program cutbacks to avoid a tax increase. The president described it as the start of a difficult budget battle. Congressional leaders who attended a White House briefing report the 1973 74 federal budget will be sent to Congress.
Edward J. Diaz became the first to file nominating papers for the April 17 election to the Lompoc Unified School District Board of Trustees. Six total candidates now listed with two seats open. filing deadline February 16.
President Nixon designated 7 p.m. EST as a national Moment of Prayer and Thanksgiving and named a 24 hour national day of prayer. He signed the proclamation before leaving for Key Biscayne Florida urging all Americans to observe the moment with ceremonies and activities. He said the war's end marks peace with honor and a new era of world peace.
First Valley Bank of Lompoc plans a temporary opening by April 1 at the northeast corner of H Street and Walnut Street to operate until a permanent building is ready. Helmer Harrison will serve as president and Marston Daughtery as vice president and cashier. Board members include Beattie, Chamberlain, Cox, Ebbert, Harrison, Howard Jr, Jensen, Lizarraga, Perozzi, Sanchez and Schuyler.
The Santa Barbara Board of Supervisors will hold a 2 p.m. hearing to discuss proposed changes to the County Air Pollution Control District rules. Proposals include allowing backyard burning on agricultural burn days for dry vegetation in certain areas, with opposition to changing the current full ban. The committee also recommends permits for burning insecticide and fertilizer bags on permissive days and emergency burning of flood debris, while no recommendation is offered on burning wood waste for development projects.
