The California Taxpayers Association warns that 1971-72 will bring a bigger property tax increase as property is assessed at 25 percent of market value. Only Alameda Lassen and Mono meet the standard now. If rates stay the same, $4.18 billion in assessed value and $454.9 million in new taxes result, with 1970-71 expected around $773.8 million.

Moon rocks push theories toward fact, scientists say

Scientists study 122.6 pounds of lunar samples from Apollo 11 and 12 to refine ideas about the moon’s origin and early history. New data suggest a partially hot early moon, crust formation, and a cool core, narrowing debates over capture versus coaccretion and challenging earlier beliefs.
