Revenue sharing plan splits $5 billion to states

White House released figures showing $5 billion of Nixon's revenue sharing would go to states starting Oct. 1 on a population basis. California would receive $590 million, Alaska $8.5 million, with 52 percent kept by state governments and opposition mounting in Congress.

California Senate Seeks Gas Tax for Transit and Smog Research

Sen. Nicholas C. Petris proposes a constitutional amendment to divert one cent of the seven cent gasoline tax per gallon to rapid transit projects and smog research. The plan would start at an estimated $26 million in year one rising to $40 million later, with 48 percent sent to city governments. The measure is framed to reduce auto congestion and pollution while funding transit improvements.

Avalanche Threat Grows After Weekend Slaughter at Stevens Pass

In Washingtons Cascade Mountains warm rain over snow packs prompted officials to warn of increasing avalanche danger. Roads between east and west Washington closed as Stevens Pass area saw a 200 yard wide slide up to 60 feet deep. Four Seattle area residents died in a cabin collapse while two girls survived after spending 11 hours under snow. Deborah Edgers 19 said a snow fence was planned but never built.

Farm leaders challenge Nixon plan to abolish Agriculture Dept

A top farm bloc leader and NFU President Dechant attack President Nixon's proposal to abolish eight cabinet departments and fuse agencies into four, arguing it harms rural needs. Rep Poage says a separate Agriculture Department remains essential to manage food security and rural issues.

Flournoy-Split With Reagan Over Welfare Plan

San Francisco Republican Controller Houston S. Flournoy split with Gov. Ronald Reagan on President Nixon's Family Assistance Welfare plan. Intelsat 4 launches mark U.S. space show week

A $13.5 million Intelsat 4 communications satellite was maneuvered for a Wednesday boost to a permanent outpost after a successful Atlas Centaur ascent. The Atlas Centaur rocket cost $29.5 million with booster expenses at $16 million, after weather and technical delays. A second, smaller craft prepared for a NATO military hotline mission on Wednesday night.

Cranston seeks moratorium on Santa Barbara drilling

Senator Alan Cranston urges the Interior Department to delay two new oil platforms in the Santa Barbara Channel while he pushes Congress to consider phasing out offshore oil. He plans legislation to create an ecological reserve including 38 unused leases and to impose a five year moratorium on 29 additional leases.

Anonymous founder of AA revealed identity after death

Report notes William G. Wilson known as Bill W was cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous and kept his name anonymous in life. Wilson died at 76 in Bedford Hills after a career as a Wall Street broker and service to AA. his death follows decades of anonymity per AA tradition.
