California Democrats shift to pragmatic 72 ballot focus
At the California state convention, Democrats moved from ideology to electing candidates and defeating Nixon in 1972. Charles Manatt won the state chairmanship by a narrow margin over George E. Brown Jr. and vowed to mobilize a large volunteer base to back the eventual Democratic presidential nominee. Muskie led the field with McGovern and Bayh also campaigning. Republicans remained unified.
