Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield refused to join Democrats urging Nixon to resign. He urged open minds on impeachment if the House moves to impeach and Nixon faces Senate trial. Executives from seven top oil companies told a Senate subcommittee profits rose sharply in 1973 but denied a bonanza amid the energy crisis. Senator Henry M. Jackson pressed the case as labor data showed fuel prices surged, contributing to broader inflation.

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors continued a public hearing on a proposed county oil ordinance to April 23 at 9 30 a m and scheduled a Feb 6 work session with the oil code committee to draft a clearer rule. Oil industry reps opposed the environmentalist alternatives debated for over four hours. In a second action the board granted realtor Tom Bohlinger of Santa Ynez an appeal to extend his commercial building at 3358 Sagunto St despite a local moratorium, stating septic tank relocation would not worsen area sewage problems.
Prime Minister Golda Meir told parliament Israel signed a disengagement pact with Egypt to avert a new Middle East war. She cited a 13 mile Sinai withdrawal from the Suez Canal as key to peace while noting no progress with Syria on disengagement or POW lists. Libyan sources claim the Soviet Union halted arms to Damascus to push Syria toward negotiations.
