Bridges meets Canadian dock workers over US port strike
Longshoremen leader Harry Bridges held a closed session with Oregon Washington and British Columbia representatives in San Francisco to urge Canadian dockers to refuse handling cargo diverted from the 24 US West Coast ports. President Nixon condemned the strike in his State of the Union. Vancouver port authorities said Canadian cargo ships get priority, while last year shippers bypassed this by routing US bound freight on top of Canadian freight. Wheat flows surged at Seattle docks as LA Harbor laid off port workers, with unemployment feared in the San Francisco Bay area as the walkout continues.
