Legionnaires disease mystery solved by detective work
Six months of medical detective work linked a slow growing gram negative bacterium to the Legionnaires disease deaths and to 180 visitors at a Philadelphia hotel. CDC researchers say the germ’s transmission route remains unknown but tests confirm 29 of 33 pneumonia like cases were infected, with past links to St Elizabeths Hospital and Pontiac Fever under consideration.
