Strike toll climbs to decade high in 1970 labor action

Washington reports 62 million man days lost in 1970 with the GM 71 day strike accounting for a quarter of the total. Labor Department notes 5.6 thousand strikes affecting 3.3 million workers, the third highest annual total since World War II.

Peaceful Chicano protest ends in rock throwing melee

A 1 000 strong rally from the National Chicano Moratorium Committee at Parker Center escalated into rock throwing after protesters spilled into streets and a city hall site. Police arrested 32, dozens injured, flag ripped from the annex, assembly declared illegal.

State staff layoffs eyed as Reagan trims government

In Sacramento, top official Edwin Meese III said some state workers may be laid off amid Reagan's drive to cut costs, but mass layoffs are not anticipated. He noted layoffs would target technical staff if needed and vacancies should be filled by transfers where possible.

Pilot Whale Herd Strands and Dies at San Clemente Island

A 29 head herd of pilot whales stranded on San Clemente Island over the weekend and perished as tides dropped. John Prescott, curator of Marineland and consultant to the state fish and game department, noted the group included 17 males, 11 females, and one calf, with the largest reaching 16 feet. He said pilot whales are prone to beach strandings.
