Lompoc EDD branch manager Janie Bunn reports a 300 percent rise in unemployment claims as the agency extends hours to 6 to 10 p.m. to help the jobless file claims. Federal additions bring total potential benefits to 52 weeks with new categories for nontraditional workers.
A 12 year old Lompoc boy, Todd Gautreaux, received second and third degree burns while handling black powder at home. He was rushed to Lompoc Hospital then moved to the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation Center in San Fernando Valley. Fire officials say static electricity arced from his shoe rug to the television, igniting the powder with only minor property damage.
Acting chairman Rep. Al Ullman of the Ways and Means Committee said the panel will approve within two months a multibillion dollar tax cut for low and middle income citizens. A man wanted for armed robbery and probation violations in Oregon killed himself during a pursuit near Harris Grade north of Lompoc as California Highway Patrol units joined the chase. He fled from Lompoc officers at about 11 30 a.m. armed with a rifle and sped toward Harris Grade.
