South Vietnamese losses: 304 killed, 796 wounded. enemy deaths listed at 1,999. Da Nang area saw a six hour battle and a Marine truck ambush.
Berkeley voices warn on air pollution as Arie Jan Haagen-Smit calls the smog fight a gigantic task but solvable, while two local bicycle accidents leave an eight year old in fair condition and a seven year old with minor injuries. Police note no codes violations in the first crash. second incident involves a sidewalk bicycle collision near Vandenberg Village.
A federal study by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation reviews flood storage options for Lake Cachuma. It suggests reserving 15 000 acre feet from November 15 to February 1 could cut outflow roughly in half for floods up to a 50 year event, with only about a two percent risk of reducing annual yield. The report notes current usage around 20 000 acre feet and weighs larger space reservations against potential yield loss, while stressing feasibility with minimal extra dam costs.
Buena Vista Elementary School in Vandenberg Village faced queries after Principal Wilbur Krauth sent notices asking parents to buy paper, pencils, glue and other pupil supplies. He argues state law requires free supplies but cited district finances and a delayed state delivery as reasons for the action. The district spokesman said the move is not district wide and an inquiry will follow.
Edgartown Massachusetts UPI reports deputy sheriff Christopher S Look Jr testifies for 45 minutes denying Kennedy account of the July 18 auto crash that killed Mary Jo Kopechne. Look says he saw the Kennedy car with two and possibly three occupants about 12 40 to 12 45 a m, contradicting Kennedy’s time element as the inquest proceeds.
United Electrical Workers returned to work at Vandenberg Air Force Base after a two day walkout over job assignments and pay rules under the Davis Bacon Law. Wilbur Phillipini cited discrepancies where electrical tasks were performed by workers at lower wages, though no union action followed.
Rep. John Tunney of California declared his candidacy for the U S Senate seat held by Republican George Murphy. Tunney, 35, represents Riverside Imperial and part of San Bernardino Counties and won an upset in 1965. He vows to make environmental destruction a campaign issue.
Rain begins this afternoon and lingers through Friday with high temperatures in the 60s. Tonight’s low in the high 50s, southeast winds 15 to 25 mph increasing to 20 to 35 mph. Rain heavy at times. Friday tides reach 6.9 feet at 10:26 am with lows of 1.8 feet at 4:14 am and 1.6 feet at 5:38 pm.
