Holiday fires take big toll across multiple cities
Street by street the holiday toll rose as fires claimed many lives. In Chicago’s Pilsen five died in a four story building blaze, while a prior Christmas Eve fire killed 12 nearby. A New Year weekend spate led to over 80 deaths nationwide, with a nine life hotel fire in Shamokin, Pa and a deadly Northwest Side blaze under investigation. In Dyson La a family of four perished, and Grand Rapids saw a six child death from a New Year’s Day fire. A fifth body was found in Brooklyn after a December 22 downtown blaze.
