Nixon signs 55 mph speed limit into law nationwide

President Nixon signed a law lowering state speed limits to 55 mph to save gas. Holiday travelers faced closed stations with only about 10 percent of Los Angeles area stations open. The act requires states to comply within 60 days, with a June 30 1975 cutoff unless earlier rescission.

Rep. Charles Teague Dies at 64 in Santa Paula

Teague a veteran Republican congressman and longtime California ally died in his sleep from an apparent heart attack New Year’s Day at his son Alan Teague’s Santa Paula home. He served 10 terms and led on farming policy while opposing offshore drilling. Memorial service set Friday at Skillin Snyder Mortuary with cremation.

Auditor-controller blasts county administrator

Santa Barbara County Auditor-Controller Paul E. Floyd criticized County Administrator Raymond D. Johnson for withholding a memorandum about consolidating offices until 77 days after Johnson allegedly gave copies to the county supervisors. The dispute arose as Supervisor James M. Slater proposed creating a county Department of Finance to absorb the auditor-controller, treasurer-public administrator, tax collector, and resources and collections offices.

First New Year Baby Born in Lompoc Valley

Jeffery Michael Oliver arrived at 4 14 pm at Lompoc District Hospital weighing 8 pounds 14 ounces. He is the son of Sharon and James Oliver of 113 A E Prune Ave. Jordano's Market employee. The hospital nurse noted this as the first baby in years. Later at Vandenberg Air Force Hospital Joyce Harding delivered Christinia Marie Harding at 7 55 pm, child of Airman First Class Donald E. Harding of the 392nd Communications Squadron. The Harding baby will live at 224 North O Street Apt 2.

Vandenberg Airman Found Dead in El Monte

Los Angeles County detectives report no leads or murder weapon in the death of David Boberg 20 an airman on leave from the 4392nd Civil Engineering Squadron. His body was found in the rear of his camper on a dead end street near Lovers Lane by El Monte police. A post mortem was planned to identify the weapon and confirm cause.
