New Year truce ends with bombing missions in North Vietnam

U S warplanes resumed operations over North Vietnam at 1300 hours after a 36 hour holiday standdown. The strikes targeted the panhandle below the 20th Parallel and avoided Hanoi Haiphong heartland as Nixon halted bombing of that zone. Ground fighting continued in South Vietnam with reported Viet Cong and North Vietnamese violations and casualties.

Peace talks open at technical level in Paris

The United States begins a new round of talks with North Vietnam at a technical level to work out details of a military and political settlement. Kissinger and Le Duc Tho planned to resume formal negotiations in Paris on January 8 after Kissinger conferred with President Nixon in Washington. Reports from Saigon indicate behind the scenes talks yielded a compromise between Nixon and Hanoi.

Councilman urges higher rates for large water users

Lompoc City Councilman Sol Lefkowitz proposes adding a larger hike for big users to offset a reduced free water allowance. He argues the plan currently shifts burden to small users, noting the present ordinance would raise about $78,000, with Lefkowitz’s change adding about $15,000 annually.

Christmas charity flows after trailer fire at Vandenberg

Mrs Zebedee Catchings and her three children survived a Christmas Eve trailer fire at Vandenberg. Within hours donations poured in from base residents and off base to help the family. Family Services volunteers coordinated clothing toys furniture and money with hundreds of dollars collected and gifts distributed. The Officers Wives Club opened the thrift shop to aid the family as the community rallied from base commander to airmen.

New Year Holiday Traffic Toll Near NSC Estimate

National Safety Council projected 430 to 530 deaths in traffic accidents from Friday eve to Monday midnight. A United Press International count at 8 a.m. EST tallied 441 traffic deaths with 613 total including fire and planes.

Local New Year crackdown cuts drunk driving arrests in Santa Barbara region

Authorities credit a major drunken driving crackdown during the New Year weekend for a low injury toll. One fatality reported in Santa Barbara City. Lompoc and Buellton CHP areas show 13 arrests, 34 in Santa Barbara jurisdiction, 32 in Santa Maria. Four of 13 Lompoc Jail entrants had prior drunk driving convictions. An accident near 2 a.m. involved Wilmer Sandoval and Manuel Casio, with Sandoval taken to base hospital.
