Year 1970 at Vandenberg Sees Record Missile Activity

The year 1970 at Vandenberg AFB features a record number of Minuteman launches by SAC crews along with space booster tests by Air Force Systems Command. Notable milestones include the 1000th missile launched from Vandenberg since 1958, the Minuteman III development progress, and a spectacular October simultaneous salvo of two SAC Minuteman II missiles.

Petition to block forest mining advances in Santa Barbara area

Sierra Club officials announce a drive to collect 5 000 signatures opposing U S Gypsum open pit phosphate mining in Los Padres National Forest Ventura County. Hearings are slated for January 1971 with petitions due January 10 as public opposition grows. Nearby Santa Barbara Biltmore Hotel plans four cottage units and demolition of three, boosting sleeping capacity at a January 6 hearing.

20 Officers to Graduate From Allan Hancock College Police Academy

Robert Tate district attorney for San Luis Obispo County will speak at Allan Hancock College Police Academy graduation Monday January 4 at 7 p.m. in the student center. Board president Ernest Righetti and college president Walter Conrad will present diplomas and welcome remarks. Twenty officers from Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties completed a 300 hour seven week program.

Lompoc Groups Schedule January Community Meetings

Warden Frank Kenton will speak to the Lompoc Vandenberg AAUW on January 6 at 8 30 p.m. in the Lompoc Public Library Multi Use Room about FCI Community Relations and Education Programs. The Veterans WWI barracks and Ladies Auxiliary host a noon potluck at the Veterans Memorial Building. The Lompoc Valley Chamber holds a general meeting January 20 at the Valley Club with Roger Phillips as guest speaker and a no host lunch for $1 85.
