Soviet court to try 12th Jewish suspect in Leningrad hijack plot

A Soviet military court will try Wolf Zalmonson, 31, identified as the 12th man in the Leningrad hijacking case. He is brother of sentenced Zalmonsons and brother-in-law of ringleader Eduard Kuznetsov, amid a wave of Zionist treason prosecutions and detentions across Soviet cities.

Holiday deaths exceed early New Year toll estimates

Dynamite May Have Caused Kentucky Mine Explosion

Federal and state inspectors investigate a coal mine disaster in Hyden Kentucky that killed 38 people. Officials say dynamite likely triggered gas ignition. on site work begins at 10 am EST with possible months of hearings and a public explanation expected.

Israeli Soldier Hit in Guerrilla Attack on Golan Heights

An Israeli soldier was wounded in an Arab guerrilla attack from Syria against the Golan Heights. Israel returned fire after the commandos opened with bazookas. Two settlements in the Upper Galilee were also hit from Lebanon with no casualties reported. The week-long clashes left at least 17 guerrillas and two Israeli soldiers dead. In Amman, Premier Wastfidel pledged Jordan’s lead in the struggle and promised more support. Egypt's Sadat met with UN delegate Al Zayyat to discuss the crisis with Israel.

Viet Cong cease fire violated 46 times in New Year truce

UPI dispatch reports 46 enemy initiated incidents during the Allied New Year cease-fire, with 68 Communists killed in Cambodia and five Americans killed or wounded in pre and post truces. In Tripoli, 16 aboard an Egypt United Arab Airlines Comet perished in a crash near the city airport.

Lompoc Water Commission to Study Release Plan

The Lompoc Water Commission will meet Monday at 1 30 p m in City Hall to discuss Bureau of Reclamation plans to revamp water release from Cachuma Dam. Legal counsel Stanley Hatch and engineer Thomas Stetson will present reports on negotiations and current arrangements, with City Atty James Longtin and Public Works Director Ken Dawson detailing other aspects.
