POW Release Deadline Near With No Lists Shown

The Defense Department said North Vietnam refused to provide the 48 hour advance list of 100 plus POWs to be freed. The 7 p.m. EST deadline passed without confirmation as U S officials considered protests to the Joint Military Commission in Saigon. Negotiations continued with Maj Gen Gilbert Woodward and Viet Cong reps as a four hour JMC subcommission session yielded no progress.

Lower courts must rule on abortion decisions

The Supreme Court directed lower federal courts to rule on nine state anti abortion laws in light of its Texas Georgia decisions. Justices refused to reconsider the Jan. 22 ruling, sending cases back to district courts to apply the Georgia Texas yardstick restricting state interference in early pregnancy and final six months. The court also let stand a ruling striking down parts of the Texas vagrancy law and declined to exempt suburban Detroit districts from a busing program. The docket was cleared of abortion case backlog.
