Marines thanked by city in Lompoc bridge praise

The 13th Engineer Battalion Marines repaired a Bailey bridge washed out by the Santa Ynez flood and work on the 13th Street bridge was nearing completion. The City Council approved 300 for a stag barbecue at the Elks Club to honor the Marines as officials attended and Mayor Robert Mac Clare praised their rapid work. Over the weekend it rained.

Two Lompoc Citizens Named to County Grand Jury

Clarence A. Schutte of Montecito will chair the 1961 County Grand Jury. Two Lompoc residents are among the 19 jurors selected by Presiding Superior Judge John T. Rickard, alongside members from Santa Barbara Santa Maria Solvang and other communities.

UCSB Student Wins First Round in $5,025 Suit Against DA

UCSB student Daniel H. Weisman won a court default against the county district attorney’s office in a $5,025 suit alleging assault outside the Santa Barbara Municipal Court. Deputy County Counsel Mel bourne Weddle said the battle is not over as he seeks to set aside the default entry citing excusable neglect. Weisman, 20, represented himself in the case naming Riley Millard and District Attorney David D. Milner.

Observers note the indictment of 11 people linked to a city franchise garbage firm marks the fourth major blow in a month, following floods and a large oil spill that fouled beaches and harbor.

Storms Stranded Travelers as California Snow Spreads

About 15 people were stranded in Azusa as storms hit Southern California and snow closed mountain roads in the West. Flood warnings, fallen trees, and mudslides blocked highways while two autos were buried by an avalanche near the San Gabriel Mountains.
