President Nixon told NATO allies in Brussels he hopes for a summit with the Kremlin "in due course" after working out a united Western program. He greeted cheering Belgian schoolchildren at the Unknown Soldier square before heading to lunch at the Royal Palace with King Baudouin.

Burglars Strike Two Lompoc Churches Saturday Night

Lompoc police report two churches Bethany Lutheran at 135 S E St and United Methodist at 925 N I St were entered through unlocked doors. The Lutheran sanctuary lost small change. the Methodist church reported $39 in cash a tape recorder and one tape plus three checks stolen. An associated Gulf Oil station at 901 N H St disclosed a Friday loss of $200 in cash and checks after a tampered safe.

Cranston offers to set up local meet on Lompoc flood dam

U S Senator Alan Cranston expressed personal interest in the Lompoc Valley flood problems from the Santa Ynez River and offered to arrange a meeting with the California caucus to discuss the Lompoc Narrows Dam Project. Representative Teague favored a hearing after the interior secretary study arrives, with local officials weighing action.

Storm Lifts Santa Ynez River After heavy rains

The Santa Ynez River rose significantly as heavy rains fell around Lake Cachuma. Officials reported the peak flow at Lake Cachuma around 3 p.m. yesterday with 10 000 CFS in Lompoc area. last January the flood reached about 80 000 CFS. No emergency is declared but monitoring continues and disaster plans are on standby if needed. Rain totaled about 10 inches in Lompoc from yesterday morning to today morning, bringing the year to 17.88 inches.

Tragic Highway 101 Crash Kills 6 Year Old Air Force Child

A car crash on Highway 101 north of the Gaviota Tunnel in heavy rain killed six year old Scott Kenneth Schaebethal and left his parents and newborn brother seriously injured. Capt Kenneth Paul Schaebethal and Suzanne Schaebethal suffered serious facial and internal injuries. the infant Keith Westley Schaebethal was listed in guarded condition at Cottage Hospital.

Mars probe countdown underway at Cape Kennedy

The countdown began at 10:54 am EST for Mariner spacecraft to fly within 2,000 miles of Mars. Ground crew and schedules also include a weather satellite launch at 2:35 am Wednesday and Apollo 9 Earth orbit mission at 11 am Friday. Mariner 6 aims for an 8:14 pm EST liftoff atop Atlas-Centaur, potentially covering 226 million miles with a 156 day fly-by plan by July 31. NASA officials say Mars will be explored in the next 10 to 15 years amid wary Russian activity.
