The passage concerns January CPI data from the Labor Department, noting a 0.6 percent monthly rise the smallest since April. It highlights price moves across categories including beef, sugar, cereal, bread, bakery items, soft drinks, candy, and transportation costs, with mixed shifts in nonfood commodities and retail items.
John N. Mitchell H. R. Haldeman and John Ehrlichman were sentenced to a minimum of two and a half years to eight years in prison for obstruction of justice conspiracy and lying. Robert C. Mardian received ten months to three years. Ehrlichman faces an additional 20 months to five years for the Ellsberg psychiatrist office break in.
Two students were suspended after a campus brawl at Lompoc High School in which teacher David Krizman 24 and dean David Herber 39 were shoved or knocked down. Krizman filed a battery complaint. Herber did not. Jerome Bommersbach 34 and Herber separated suspects and escorted them to the admin office where Krizman joined. Police investigated. the two students remain pending principal Robert Paisola’s decision and have been referred to the Lompoc Police Juvenile Department.

City council holds 4 p.m. study session and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday vote on a $1.15 million spending package for a three year community development grant plan. The proposal funds a new city hall, senior and youth centers, rehabilitation programs, fire station work, and a downtown redevelopment component drawing on CD and revenue sharing funds.
President Ford will postpone veto action on a bill delaying the 3 dollar per barrel oil import fee hike for 90 days to March or April. He seeks time to plan strategy for his broader economic energy recovery program and possible congressional compromise.
John Mitchell, Robert Mardian, John Ehrlichman, and H R Haldeman faced prison terms after their Watergate trial. Sirica gave Mitchell and Haldeman sentences from two and a half to eight years and Ehrlichman similar, with Mardian 10 months to three years. The defendants urged mercy, Ehrlichman citing rehabilitation needs and prior Indian land claims work, while Wilson extolled Haldeman’s loyalty to Nixon.
Former President Richard Nixon, visiting Walter Annenberg's estate, made no immediate comment on four Watergate conspirators receiving jail terms. He remains inaccessible to reporters with a Saturday party planned in his honor and prior ties to Haldeman Ehrlichman and Mitchell noted.
The U S Navy is training four Saudi arabian companies at the Naval Training Center and several Iranian air crews at Miramar. Two Saudi groups of 51 each are halfway through a 13 week recruit course after arriving December 18.
