Low bid exceeds engineer estimate for county park work

Floyd V Wells Inc of Santa Maria submitted the low bid of 18772 for water and electrical improvements at Kenneth L Adam County Park near Lompoc. Engineering estimate was 13350. Report and recommendation to Board of Supervisors set for Monday. Jury probe into Santa Barbara refuse operations continues into fifth day at County Administration Building. Deliberations expected to end today. Grand Jury is the 1968 holdover with 1969 selection later today if discharged. Arguello Group meeting date moved to Wednesday February 26 with speaker William Denneen of Allan Hancock College at Security Pacific Bank Santa Maria.

Legislation to raise governor aides salaries introduced

Sacramento California UPI Senator Randolph Collier introduced bills to lift pay for Ronald Reagan's top aides and allow the governor to set salaries for other high level executives. The plan would raise the six top aides to 35000 annually and adjust heads of major agencies to 32500 with other department heads at 30000 or 27500. A seven member committee would review executive salaries.

Storm threatens delay in search for downed plane

A new storm moved down the High Sierra delaying the search for a gamblers special airliner that vanished with 35 aboard after takeoff from Hawthorne Nevada. Military planes and Civil Air Patrol craft scoured the 14,000 foot terrain near the California Nevada border but found no sign of the DC3.

Wells Gets Third Star Nomination For Inspector General

President Nixon submitted Maj. Gen. Selmon W. Wells for promotion to lieutenant general and nomination as Inspector General of the Air Force. Wells, SAC deputy chief of staff operations at Omaha, led ISTRAD from 1963 to 1965 and has held multiple SAC command roles since 1949. He will replace Lt. Gen. Joseph H. Moore and assume duties March 1. Wells is a 1934 Santa Barbara High School graduate, married to Consuelo Rickard.

University agitation linked to campus violence master plan

Jay Michaels of the University of California testified before a legislative subcommittee that full-time agitators are centrally involved in planning campus violence across campuses. He described them as revolutionaries skilled in tactics, with non-students traveling to disrupt events, while stressing they may not be Communists.

Mercy food drop to Diego Garcia aids US tracking team

A British military cargo plane dropped a ton of food to U.S. Army satellite tracking technicians on Diego Garcia Island in the Indian Ocean. The aid came after their regular supply ship failed to deliver, according to the Royal Air Force.
