Lompoc Record announces March 1 price hikes due to rising costs. Home delivery rises from 2.10 to 2.25 monthly, newsstand from 0.10 to 0.15. General manager Rennie L. Adam cites higher newsprint costs and a 1973 cost increase of over 40,000 dollars as pressures on quality.
Lompoc City Council debates proceeding with a complete storm drain project to end downtown flooding at a city cost of 582000 funded by federal revenue sharing. Bid from O Shaughnessy Co of Goleta tops 704000 plus 71000 testing and inspection. county and state contributions outlined. Councilman Lefkowitz backs the total system as a solid city foundation.
Local stations report Sunday closures with Saturday hours uncertain. Exxon at 1337 North H St runs 8 to 11 a.m. when open. S and S at 400 W Ocean Ave closed Sunday. Maj. Gen. Herbert A. Lyon will replace Maj. Gen. Jessup D. Lowe as commander of the Space and Missile Test Center at Vandenberg. Lowe retires effective April 1. Lyon, a Minnesota native, was commissioned in 1943 and has led Air Force research and development since 1949 with assignments in Air Force Systems Command since 1962.
Julie Nixon Eisenhower suffered pain and nausea after emergency surgery for a bleeding ovarian cyst at Indiana University Hospital. Doctors confirmed the cyst was not malignant.
A federal judge told Watergate special prosecutor Leon Jaworski to guard against TV comments but declined to set a broad gag rule. The hearing focused on Dwight Chapin’s trial and John Dean III testimony, with Gesell urging Jaworski to avoid talk show remarks while acknowledging publicity risks.
Two California prison fugitives, Donald D DeFreeze and Theron Wheeler, are unofficially named by newspapers and a TV station as suspects in the Patricia Hearst kidnapping. The FBI says it has not concluded they are suspects, while authorities probe voices on a tape and search related homes.
The County Office of Environmental Quality will hold a Feb 21 hearing in Santa Barbara on a Rammco Investment Co environmental declaration for a second lot split near La Purisima Mission. The 223.4 acre site would become three 20 acre parcels and one 163 acre parcel, with neighbors voicing concerns over development near the historic Mission northeast of Lompoc.
Schools and government offices will close Monday for Washington's birthday. Postal service will run on holiday schedules except for two exceptions at Godden's Organ and Piano Center in Ocean Ave and Mr Paintman on H Street, which stay open all day. The Vandenberg Village substation will be closed Monday.
