Dan Barr rises from Cabrillo to VMI wrestling and more

Dan Barr grew from a 120 pound Cabrillo High sophomore to a 6 3 225 pound VMI senior and top athlete. He set high school lifts, posted a 40 5 college wrestling record, and holds VMI marks in weight toss and lifts while pursuing electrical engineering and ROTC. He credits coach Dave Long for pushing him from weight room to mats and aims for hammer throw Olympic trials and graduate study in systems design.

Valley Sends 17 Wrestlers to CIF Sectionals at West Torrance

A crew of 17 Cabrillo and Lompoc grapplers head to West Torrance High for the CIF wrestling sectionals with top teams from Northern and Bay Leagues aiming for the Feb. 23 CIF championships at Marina High and a chance at the March 1–2 state meet. The Cabrillo lineup features George Hervey, Kris Andrews, Bob Hicks, Tim Little, Paul Larson, Mark Hall, Ed Smith, Bruce Probst, and Benje Williams. Lompoc counters with Roy Patterson, Kevin King, Andy Huyck, Donnie Scruggs, Mike Mosby, Joey Grijalva, and Frank Silva, as Willard Grossi is sidelined by an elbow injury. The event starts 10:30 a.m. at West Torrance High, with admission $1 for students and $1.50 for adults.

Cool Papa Bell named to baseball Hall of Fame

James Bell known as Cool Papa Bell is voted into the baseball Hall of Fame by the Negro Leagues Special Committee. Bell, 70, remains calm about the unanimous selection and will be enshrined in Cooperstown on Aug. 12 with Mickey Mantle White Ford Sunny Jim Bottomley Jocko Conlan and Sam Thompson. Cabrillo Basketball Team Gets Board OK for Hawaii Trip

The 1974 75 Cabrillo team wins school board approval for a Hawaii trip with three games against Kaiser Castle High and Kailua High set for December 26 to 28. Principal Robert Bickford says next steps with CIF and national federation should be automatic. Fundraising will cover all trip costs.

Buena High won the triangular swimming meet posting 93 points to Lompoc 43 and Cabrillo 36. Event winners included Patno and Steinhouse in the 200 medley relay and Brock in the 200 free. Cabrillo hosts Righetti and Lompoc at 3 15 today as league play resumes with a likely Lompoc Cabrillo title showdown.
