Education writer Vaughn Procto presents the first of a series on Glen Wegner the Lompoc Unified School District superintendent. Wegner discusses a fluid philosophy focused on student needs and relevance of curricula, insisting education must relate to the learner and real life applications.
UPI reports a brief Tet cease fire paused major air operations after a day of heavy B52 strikes and fighter bombers. Despite clashes near Cam Ranh Bay and in bases around Central Highlands, overall allied and Viet Cong truces held with limited incidents as diplomacy continued.
West Coast longshoremen leaders entered a third day of caucus in San Francisco over a tentative settlement with the Pacific Maritime Association aimed at ending the 129 day strike. If approved by the caucus and urged by leaders, a union vote could occur this week with workers returning to docks by week’s end.
President Nixon agreed to take steps to end forced busing but withheld immediate support for constitutional amendments. Senators Baker and Brock reported he would act but did not decide among three action paths while forming a Cabinet committee to study desegregation approaches.
The tanker V A Fogg lies sunk in 90 feet of water after a massive blast that killed all 39 crewmen. The forward deck buckled, a body was found in the chart room, and another crewman’s arm was seen amid debris. The ship had left Freeport on February 1 to rinse chemical residue. Wreckage was located by sonar and divers from the Miss Freeport photographed the hulk.
The Lompoc City Council plans regular session to decide on a proposed 20 percent water rate increase while an alternate plan and a commission recommendation to cut the basic water allowance are under study. The water commission will meet prior to the council to review an alternate proposal. Also on the agenda is a police recommendation to set park closing time at 11 p.m. daily due to rising park crime, including Ryan Memorial Park.
Eight candidates gather for a first face to face meeting hosted by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers at 8 p.m. in the Chemical Workers Union building on South I Street. Incumbents Art Scott and Mrs. Charlotte Benton join Steven L. Cox Ann Dewberry William W. Johnson Gaspare C. Oneto Donald E. Schuyler and Emil Scolari attend. Election set for April 11 with mild temperature outlook and tidal times noted.
