Hodges Ready to Lead Mets After Heart Attack

Mets manager Gil Hodges, 45, recovering from a heart attack, eyes spring training in Florida and belives the club may improve despite no trades. Smith to start at first as Cal Poly opens 1969 season

Cal Poly Mustangs announce Lee Smith, a Lompoc native and Hancock College transfer, will start at first base in the season opener against the UCSB Gauchos in San Luis Obispo. Smith, a versatile infielder, replaces injured senior Mike Blaine and may also play third. he was All-CIF at Lompoc and is a junior accounting major. Also noted is a Coastal Rally Teams clinic for car enthusiasts in Lompoc with a 50 cent registration fee and details from Dick Miller.
