Flood loans meet opposition from local banks in Madera

Woman injured when car collides with train at crossing

A Lompoc woman, Betty Jo O H inley, 24, suffered scalp lacerations and abrasions when her car was struck by a Southern Pacific diesel engine at the North A Street crossing. She was treated at Lompoc Hospital and listed in good condition. Engineer H P Echols was not injured. Authorities noted automatic gates and signals at the crossing and said no charges were filed pending investigation.

Federal workers to get a large pay raise this summer

Civil service and postal workers will receive a roughly nine to ten percent pay rise effective July 1, aimed at aligning federal wages with private industry. The raise, part of two-year trend, costs about $3 billion and lifts civilian and military payroll to about $49 billion annually. Higher ups receive additional increases amid a broader pay hikes approved by Congress.
