Wounded whale spared after long harbor struggle
In Long Beach California a pilot whale about 1500 pounds with a bullet wound near its blowhole lingered in the harbor Monday. Lifeguards towed it several miles out to sea after five failed attempts. the whale finally headed away and did not return. Authorities hoped the animal was only temporarily sick rather than dying.
