Slush Dampens Southern California Ski Weekend
Warm tropical rains drenched mountain areas below 8000 feet in Southern California, melting last week's heavy snow into slush and runoff. Skiers left resorts amid heavy traffic, with Lake Arrowhead receiving nearly nine inches of rain and over a foot of snow melting. authorities reported avalanches, mudslides, and closed highways while rescue teams searched the Big Bear wreckage. Interstate 5 reopened after closures but remained crowded with snow seekers as rain extended across the region. Commerce Secretary Richardson called January unemployment drop encouraging though not guaranteed to continue, saying inflation containment and job gains remain on the right track.
