Richard Kintzel Solvang postmaster since 1965 will retire this Friday ending a tenure that began after Arne Madsen. The 65 year Solvang post office history has seen rising receipts from 2842.16 in 1934 to about 250000 on the eve of retirement.

Danish Days queen contest launches during Solvang festival
March 5 through April 15 marks the new Danish Days queen event in Solvang. Charles Greenwald says SBA will run a ticket sales campaign with candidates nominated by organizations. Candidates must be single of Danish descent and over 16, with the queen and court to wear Danish costumes and attend events statewide. A coronation ball is tentatively set for June 5 Gundlovs Dag.

Planners Back Variance for Solvang Mobil Freestanding Sign
The County Planning Commission recommended approval of Rudy Placencia owner of Solvang Mobil for a zoning variance to place a freestanding sign on Mission Drive and Atterdag Drive Solvang. The variance would permit a 20 foot sign on a parcel with 110 feet of street frontage below the 115 foot standard, noting the sign would occupy the existing location of the former freestanding sign. Staff recommended denial.
